Irish girl (5) enters three-legged Buddy into dog show after accident involving family car
Beauty comes in all shapes and sizes, or so thinks five-year-old Lila Scanlon, who entered her pooch Buddy into her local dog show after he lost a leg in a car accident.
The unlucky dog has his leg amputated after Lila’s dad accidentally ran him over at Christmas time, but he’s returned to health just in time for the annual dog show in their Kerry hometown.
Lila’s mum Jennifer said: “My husband rolled over him at Christmas time. It was a terrible accident. Lila loves that dog, she’s stone mad about him. We rushed him to the local vet who did all she could for six weeks, but his leg was too badly damaged and it had to be amputated in March.”
Since the surgery, the two-year-old mongrel has learned how to walk on his two front legs, a skill that remained unmastered by all of the other dogs at the annual show.
“I own a local business in Listowel, Coco’s Boutique, so I helped organise the show. I told Lila that Buddy definitely wouldn’t be winning because everyone would think it was rigged. He did compete though and it was lovely because he’s doing so well now. It was desperate to get the call that he’d been hurt because she loves him so much,” said Jennifer.
Lila and her three-legged pal featured on the front page of this week’s Kerryman newspaper, which was hugely exciting for the five-year-old.
“Lila brought the paper home and was showing it to the dog saying ‘Look, Buddy we made the paper’,” said Jennifer.
Lila now has aspirations to become a vet.
