Sixties showband singer Eileen Reid opened up about her multiple affairs over two decades, her unplanned pregnancy and finding God on live television today.

Speaking on TV3's Midday about being unfaithful, Eileen said she never spoke to her husband Jimmy about it, nor his or her family.

The singer, who is still married to husband Jimmy, explained: “While I was married to Jimmy, I was unfaithful for years. It was during the showband era, probably going on for nearly 15 or 20 years.

“I became pregnant, nearly in the beginning when I started the affair, and it was terrible for Jimmy.

Eileen, best remembered for her hit, 'I Gave my Wedding Dress Away', said: “I never heard of the word abortion. I was looking for help and I didn't want to tell my family. There are probably loads of girls out there that had the same thing happen.

“When the gun was put to my head and I was pregnant. I prayed and cried to the sacred heart picture. The next morning I had a miscarriage. I was only two months gone.”

Speaking about how God has helped her through those difficult times, Eileen said:“It was unbelievable the way God came into my life, people in show business never talk about God.

"I had to tell Jimmy and he was great. It’s the greatest thing that ever happened to me. God showed me things because I was open. It was miraculous.”

Eileen’s story touched Midday viewers with many getting in touch with the show to praise Eileen's honesty.

One said:“Eileen can completely relate to what Eileen is saying. My mam had me when she was 19 and at the time it was a big shock and it wasn't very welcomed.

"After I was born everyone loved me and thought I was the best thing since sliced bread. Twenty three years later I'm a secondary school teacher and the others in the family all say they don't know what the family would be like without me. Eileen fair play for your honesty”

While another commented:“Eileen touched me very deeply this morning... she's no idea how much I empathise with that pain she felt. I'd listen to her all day long! Fabulous story teller.”
