Actress Saoirse Ronan has been credited with triggering a sharp surge in US parents choosing her name for their baby daughters.

According to the baby name website, the use of the name Saoirse nearly doubled in the US from 2015 to 2016, putting it at number 983 in the top 1,000 list.

The Irish name is expected to become even more common Stateside next year, particularly if the Oscar-tipped Carlow actress lands her first Academy Award for her critically-acclaimed role in upcoming film Lady Bird.

Pamela Redmond Satran, of Nameberry, said the 23-year-old Atonement and Brooklyn star's Christian name was now seen as having "star quality" in the US.

"Her prize-winning role in Lady Bird really cements her stature as one of today's leading young actresses," she said.

However, she admitted that many Americans would continue to struggle to master the name's tricky pronunciation.

"I fully expect phoneticised spellings like Seersha and Syrshah to spring up," she added.

In Ireland last year the most popular girl's name was Emily, followed by Grace and Ava.
