WATCH: Dublin Fire Brigade shows dangers of dry Christmas trees with shocking video

Zoe Brennan Whitmore

Picking the Christmas tree is a cheerful annual tradition for most families, but if not chosen and cared for in the correct way, your Christmas tree could be a potential fire risk.

Dublin Fire Brigade yesterday released a video on Twitter, in association with Fire Safety Ireland and the National Fire Protection Association, showing how flammable a natural Christmas tree can be when not regularly watered.

This quick 13 second video shows the dry tree on the left and the watered tree on the right and it is not difficult to see the devastating difference between the two.

Fire Safety Ireland took to its Facebook page to offer up more advice for homeowners.

"Keeping your Christmas tree well hydrated is the best way to fireproof it. Keep the water in the stand well above the fresh-cut base."
