It's officially the countdown to Christmas with Panto auditions under way and the most-wanted toys revealed.

Smyths Toys Superstores has released its list of top toys for Christmas 2018 and it's a mix of the old classics and the new.

The most expensive item on the list is Barbie's Dreamhouse playset at €299.99.

Unicorns, robots and guns will all be on Santa lists this year.

But board game Operation Escape is the most wanted, followed by Our Generation - The Awesome Academy School Room and Poopsie Pink/Rainbow comes in at number three. The LOL Surprise! Under wraps! and Nerf Laser Ops Alpha 2 packs make up the top five.

Meanwhile, hundreds turned up for auditions for 'Polly and the Magic Lamp' panto at the Olympia Theatre, Dublin.

Twins Sean and Enya O'Rourke (13) said it felt "weird" to audition for such a big show, but were hopeful they would shine.

"It was really weird when you're standing there with other groups and dancing and trying to do your best but everyone did their best," Enya said.

Kate Lynch (15) said she wouldn't have missed the opportunity to audition for anything after travelling from Co Cavan.

"It took about an hour and a half to travel up but it was worth it, there was a really good atmosphere in there," she said.

Stars of this year's show James Patrice and Ryan Andrews were on hand to offer advice. Andrews, who has been performing in the Olympia panto since he was 11, said this year's line-up is one of the best yet. He's set to perform alongside Erin McGregor, Rory Cowan and singer Jake Carter.
