Christmas buzz lights up street in capital
DUBLIN got ready for the festive season yesterday when the capital's Christmas tree was lit on a bitterly cold O'Connell Street.
Hundreds of hardy souls braved the winter chill for the event -- which business owners hope will kick off the seasonal spending splurge.
Dressed in a suitably flamboyant winter woolly, Dublin Lord Mayor Andrew Montague was on hand to press the flesh, along with the all important red button to illuminate the shopping thoroughfare.
"I think it's starting a buzz already -- hopefully it will kick off a Christmas feel-good factor which will tempt us all to spend a bit more," said one optimistic shop owner.
The mayor also had a host of helpers in tow. Children were wide-eyed with excitement as Christmas Strolling Characters -- such as an Ice King and Queen -- dished out chocolate and sweets.
And a medley of old-time Christmas favourites on stage were belted out in perfect unison.
Performances, in particular by St Andrew's Choir and the Hallelujah Gospel Choir, provided atmospheric cheer.
