Normally, the word 'pinafore' would set off all sorts of alarm bells. Grown women adopting styles best left to children - it rarely works. This denim pinafore, €60, from Marks & Spencer, however, bucks that trend. If you have any sort of hankering for a denim dress, this is the season to purchase one. They're everywhere.

They fall into two categories. The first are square shift dresses, which are shapeless but comfortable (Topshop, Dunnes Stores and Warehouse all have great versions).

The second category is 70s-influenced - basically, these dresses are pinafores. What we particularly like about this one, left, is the length. The just-below-the-knee hemline takes some of the little-girlishness out of it.

On another note, dungarees are all over the place at the moment. If you must do the overalls look, which is so often unflattering (and we say that as people who bought a pair), this could tick that box in a more forgiving way.
