Beauty bargain bin
AS Amy's LIDL experiment proves, you don't have to spend a fortune on high-end beauty brands to achieve great results - there are some products that repeatedly outperform their rivals and have become firm favourites down through the years. Here are some of the best beauty buys that won't break the bank:
Astral Cream, €4.99
This little blue pot of slightly gloopy wonder cream recently received a ringing endorsement from no less a beauty than Joanna Lumley, who credited it with keeping her skin in tip-top shape at the age of 70. "Cheap as chips - adore!" she raved. Women of a certain age who want to look as good as the 'Ab Fab' star - and who doesn't? - immediately rushed out to buy it.
Boots Number 7 Protect and Perfect Intense Advanced Serum, €34.50
You could literally spend hundreds of euros on an anti-ageing serum, but it's unlikely that any would outperform this modestly priced number. Back in 2009, a BBC documentary proved that the serum reduced fine lines and wrinkles in a rigorous clinical test. Queues formed outside branches of Boots, and since then the manufacturers have updated the formula to a more advanced version which promises to deliver even better results the longer you use it.
Palmer's Cocoa Butter, €5.99
Palmer's Cocoa Butter is one of those bathroom cupboard essentials that never goes out of fashion. It's been around for 160 years, and today is as well loved as ever by women wanting supple, moisturised skin year round. Katy Perry swears by it and says she can't leave the house without it, while Naomi Campbell is also a huge fan: "My mother had me smoothing in Palmer's Cocoa Butter from a very early age," she said. "Twice a day, I moisturise from top to toe. It's the simple secret of sexy skin - you want to be touchable all over." Well, if it's good enough for the supermodels...
Batiste Dry Shampoo, €3.99
Where would we be without dry shampoo? When you don't have time to wash your hair, this is the go-to product beloved of busy women everywhere. It leaves little residue, has great uplift and removes all trace of greasiness. Kim Kardashian is a big fan, and she has the great hair to prove it.
Ah, Vaseline. One of the hardest working multi-taskers in your make up bag, this little beauty is not just incredibly cheap but also incredibly versatile. Good for chapped lips? Tick. For blisters and dry hands? Tick. For removing eye make up? Tick. For protecting weather-beaten faces? Tick. Beyoncé even reportedly slathers it on her legs after moisturising to give her famous pins an extra-luxurious feel.
