Advice from a student worker

College student John Jennings has worked for three summers - and many weekends - in his local pub, de Barras, in Clonakilty.

"For me it's about being willing to take on any job," says the 21-year-old.

"Do any job you're asked to do and do it to your best ability. Make it clear that you are willing to work and that you are the employer's 'best option,' the person the employer will call on.

"I get a sense of pride from knowing they will call me because they know I'll do the job right. Employers very quickly spot anyone whose attitude is bad.

"It's about taking the initiative to get the next thing done without being told, and working as part of a team.

"Remember, when someone hires you, they're handing you responsibility. You have to put your hand up and say I can do that - and then go and do it!"
