Children's Minister Katherine Zappone has said that parents must be kept informed about potential fire safety concerns at their children's schools.

"More should be done - especially in the light of raising these issues or these circumstances I think our schools are in," she said.

Ms Zappone was speaking yesterday during a visit to Clonbrusk Community Childcare, Athlone, Co Westmeath.

Minister Kevin 'Boxer' Moran agreed that there needs to be an open conversation between parents, the schools, the Department of Education, the local council and the Government.

"I think what happened in the UK has brought a totally different light on Government and on how we deal with the question raised in relation to fire safety.

"I think that is something that the Government has taken on as a whole," Mr Moran said.

"In light of this report - yes, it was done in 2016 - we see different changes coming down the track.

"The report announced by Minister Bruton is important and it is positive news, but we need to do more."
