A YOUNG woman and a baby are recovering in hospital after a Cork fire.

The blaze was detected in a three storey apartment complex off Gerald Griffin Street in Blackpool overnight with the woman and child rescued from a first floor flat.

Both are being treated for the effects of smoke inhalation in hospital.

Their injuries are not understood to be life threatening.

The woman is also being treated for minor burns.

A total of five people were evacuated from the apartment complex and Cork Fire Brigade had the blaze under control within minutes.

Five units attended the scene.

An investigation is now underway into the precise cause of the blaze though it is being treated as accidental.
