A WOMAN has died after a collision on the Cork-Waterford road.

The female motorist suffered critical injuries and died at the scene despite desperate efforts by paramedics to stabilise her condition for transfer to Cork University Hospital (CUH).

The accident occurred shortly before 9am on the N25 near the Water Rock-Midleton exit.

The woman was the driver and only occupant of a car which was travelling eastbound in the Waterford direction.

The vehicle left the roadway and ploughed into a barrier.

Gardaí and emergency services were at the scene within minutes.

Motorists were urged to avoid the area if possible given the lengthy traffic tailbacks which at one point exceeded 1km.

A portion of the N25 was closed to allow emergency services to attend to the accident.

Diversions are expected to remain in place for some time as Garda accident scene investigators examine the stretch of road involved.

Gardaí have appealed for anyone who may have witnessed the collision to contact Midleton Garda Station.

Road conditions were described as good at the time with the weather being dry and bright.

Three units of Midleton Fire Brigade attended the accident.

Gardaí have appealed for anyone who may have witnessed the collision to contact Midleton Garda Station on 021-4621550, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.
