Young to get jobs chance after four months on dole
Young people under the age of 25 will be guaranteed a job, education or training within four months of becoming unemployed under a new plan.
The Government finished off the EU negotiations chaired by Social Protection Minister Joan Burton and Jobs Minister Richard Bruton on the European Youth Guarantee yesterday.
Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore (pictured) described the EU-wide plan as a major breakthrough.
"The objective is to provide European youth with opportunities," he said.
Under the deal, young people are supposed to get employment, further education or an apprenticeship or training within four months of being unemployed.
EU funds will be given to countries to implement the proposals.
Labour TD John Lyons said the guarantee is a strong signal of belief in young people's ability and potential.
