FROM eye-catching self-portraits to kaleidoscopic coloured cats and exploding fireworks, the nation's budding artists let their imaginations run wild for the Irish League of Credit Unions' All Ireland Art Awards.

Now in its 31st year, the competition attracted over 30,000 entries from across the island with Marty Whelan presenting awards to the winners in Dublin's Croke Park yesterday.

Winner of the 11-13 years category, Sarah Leddy, from Inniskeen, Co Louth, started and finished her piece on the day of the deadline.

"My art teacher only told me about it the day it was due, I just put my head down and got it done. It's the first competition I've ever entered," beamed the delighted 13-year-old.

Leaving Cert student Alex Wright (19), from Co Kerry, said he was "delighted" his piece scooped the top prize in the over 18s category. Alex, who hopes to study multimedia in Cork IT, said his €850 prize money will go to his college fund.
