Young man killed in early morning car accident named locally

A young Galway man killed in a car accident in the early hours of this morning has been named locally.

Brian Regan (26)  who lives in Loughrea town was killed as he walked along the Athenry Road at around 5.30am on Sunday.

He is the son of James Regan, a former member of Loughrea Town Council and a former Mayor of the town.

Mr Regan was a popular young man who worked in the Super Valu in the town. Locals said he was well known and well liked and paid tribute to his heartbroken family.

The young man was pronounced dead at scene. His body was taken to Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe where a post mortem will be carried out.

His heartbroken parents James and Mary and siblings were comforted by friends and relatives at their home today.

The driver of the car, a 19-year-old man, was uninjured. He was the sole occupant of the car.

The Athenry-Loughrea Road on the outskirts of the town was closed for a time yesterday to facilitate Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and diversions were in place.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information, particularly those who may have travelled the N66 Loughrea-Galway Road, through Loughrea Town between 1.30am and 5.30am on
