Young man killed in Christmas Day road tragedy
A young man has died following a road traffic accident on the outskirts of Castledermot, Co Kildare this evening.
The victim (29) was walking along the N78 Castledermot to Carlow road when he was struck by a car at 7.30pm.
He was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver was not injured in the collision.
A Garda spokesman said the road will remain closed overnight for a full forensic examination.
Meanwhile, there were several minor collisions in the capital on Christmas Day.
Clarehall Road was temporarily closed eastbound near the Clonshaugh Roundabout due to an incident.
Earlier, Christmas Day motorists experienced more traffic chaos on the M50 after two separate incidents in the afternoon.
Emergency services attended two separate crashes on the M50 southbound at J17 M11.
The first crash blocked the right lane and the second was on the J17 on the ramp and blocking the right lane, AA Roadwatch reported.
The first crash has since been moved to the hard shoulder and the vehicle on the ramp has been removed from the scene.
There were no injuries in either crash, gardai confirmed.
However motorists in the area continued to experience delays in the area after the incidents.
Motorway services warned of poor road conditions today and excess surface water along the full stretch of both carriageways.
