A YOUNG man was battling for his life last night following an alleged altercation at a St Patrick's Day house party.
The man, named as Ciaran O'Connell (22), from Cloughbally, near Mullagh, Co Cavan, is in critical condition on a life-support system at Beaumont Hospital with severe head injuries.
Mr O'Connell, believed to be a carpenter by trade, was initially rushed to Cavan General Hospital at 4.40am on Sunday.
He was later transferred to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin, gardai said last night.
"We are investigating an alleged assault," a garda spokesman told the Irish Independent. A number of people who were at the house party in Mullagh have been interviewed, he added.
A local resident, who did not wish to be identified, described Mr O'Connell as "a lovely young fella", who has many friends in the area.
The incident has left the small, close-knit community in shock, he added.
