THERE was no sign of Santa Claus, but eight-year-old Jaimie Donovan didn't mind as she had her trusty teddy for company as she stepped out onto the North Pole at the weekend.

This is the picture that shows the daughter of Irish endurance runner Richard Donovan, from Co Galway, becoming the youngest person ever on the North Pole.

Mr Donovan, who previously ran seven marathons in five days, flew Jaimie and his wife Caroline to the North Pole to mark the 10th anniversary of an annual marathon he organises in the Arctic.

"It was cold and the helicopter was noisy," Jaimie said. She and her teddy bear were standing on the ice at 5.30am on Easter Sunday.

"I think she quickly realised seeing Santa Claus was not going to be an option as she stepped out into those conditions," said Mr Donovan.
