Young Irishman feared drowned in Melbourne
AN Irishman is feared drowned after he tried to swim across a river while holidaying in Australia yesterday.
The missing man, in his 20s, is reported to have jumped into the Yarra River in Melbourne with friends at around 9pm on Tuesday night, Australian time.
Search and rescue teams recovered a body from the water at around 12.30am on Wednesday morning. It has yet to be formally identified.
According to reports, the group tried to swim across the river but because of the current, two of the men got into trouble.
A waiter from a nearby restaurant jumped into the water and dragged one of the men back to shore and went back into the water to try and rescue the second man.
Paramedic team manager Susie Dean said the waiter would be nominated for a bravery award for his actions.
"My understanding from witnesses is that there was one very brave young gentleman," Ms Dean said.
