Young handler learns all's fair in tug of war

A TUG-OF-WAR between child and calf was one of the unscheduled events at Kingdom County Fair in Kerry over the weekend.

Heavy showers and gusty winds failed to deter the thousands who attended the annual agricultural event at Ballybeggan Racecourse in Tralee yesterday.

The fair has been running since 1948 and is one of the largest such events in Ireland each year. Our picture, by Domnick Walsh, shows Garoid Harty from Ballyheigue getting to grips with a young Friesen calf during the "Junior Handling" competition.

The five-year-old is following in a family tradition, as both his older siblings compete in handling competitions, while his father Kieran Harty is a prize-winning breeder. As well as cattle competitions, the festival featured show jumping, Irish country crafts, a dog and pet show, and a large number of commercial stands.
