Young driver killed in Christmas night crash

A YOUNG man was killed in a car accident on Christmas night after visiting his girlfriend.

His Renault Clio left the road on a notorious stretch of bends in Co Donegal. The man, named locally as Luke Peeks (26), was from England but had been living in Killian, Frosses.

He was driving home to Inver outside Donegal Town after visiting his girlfriend in Castlefin when the tragedy occurred at Treanamullin at around 11pm.

The car was later found in a field by the road. The driver died of his injuries in hospital.

In 2009, two Latvian men were killed in an accident close to the scene of the Christmas night tragedy.

Local county councillor Patrick McGowan (FF) said he had lost count of the number of times the ESB has had to replace poles struck by cars on the series of bends. "I have raised this matter with the National Roads Authority on a number of occasions," he said.

Gardai have appealed to motorists who may have seen the accident to contact them.

A mother of one who was killed in a car crash at the weekend will be buried today.

Valerie O'Donovan (32) died early on Sunday when the car in which she was a front seat passenger crashed at Manch Middle, Ballineen, Co Cork. Ms O'Donovan, from Riverview Drive in Ballineen, was returning from a night out when the car struck a telegraph pole. The male driver escaped serious injury.

Meanwhile, a young man remains critically ill in hospital after he was injured in a road accident while out walking in the early morning.

The man (21), whose family live in Barna, 8km west of Galway city, was home on holidays from England. He was struck by a vehicle on Sunday in Galway.

A Lithuanian man, Marius Strelciunas, of Manor Court, Knocknacarra, Galway, has been charged with dangerous driving.
