Young couple out walking left seriously injured after violent attack by group of men
A YOUNG couple were taken to hospital with serious injuries after they were set upon and violently attacked by a group of men.
The pair were walking on a footpath near the Tramore Road in Waterford in the early hours of Sunday morning when they were stopped by up to four men who demanded cash.
Local councillor John Hearne told Independent.ie that the muggers then turned violent before launching an attack.
"The girl was knocked out and has to attend hospital in Cork with a suspected broken jaw while her boyfriend was repeatedly kicked in the head until he passed out and his eyeball bled."
The Sinn Féin politician said the couple were robbed and "left unconscious on the ground".
The man's wallet was taken during the ordeal while the attackers also fled with the woman's bank card.
The young couple, who asked not to be identified, are continuing to receive treatment.
A Garda spokesman confirmed they are investigating an assault which took place between 5am and 6am near the Tramore Road in Waterford.
He confirmed that the couple were taken to hospital and subsequently released.
