A YOUNG boy rescued from a swimming pool at the weekend is recovering from his ordeal.
Brendan Sweeney (4), from Castlepark, Ballybane, Galway was moved from the intensive care unit to the paediatric unit at University Hospital Galway yesterday.
Medical staff have been monitoring his condition since the incident at Leisureland swimming pool, Salthill, on Sunday afternoon.
Previously Brendan was said to be in a critical condition, but it is hoped that his condition will continue to improve.
The little boy was at the leisure complex with his parents when he got into difficulty in the swimming pool. Lifeguards on duty attempted to resuscitate him before paramedics arrived at the scene.
The little boy's family are well known in the Ballybane area and several of his relatives live there.
Speaking to the Irish Independent yesterday, parish priest Fr Sean O Cathain said prayers were being said throughout the parish for Brendan.
"We are absolutely hoping and praying that his condition will improve," Fr O Cathain said.
Sunday's incident is being treated as an accident.
Galway City Council runs the popular leisure complex, and an investigation into the incident will take place.
