The grieving widow of a man who died suddenly in Australia has paid an emotional tribute to her late husband, saying he "brought so much happiness, laughter and love" into the lives of his family.

John Lamont (37), originally from Newry, passed away in Brisbane earlier this month.

A celebration of his life will take place today.

Mr Lamont was last seen in the Barnham Street area of the city's Wynnum suburb at around 10.50pm on April 6.

A police search was launched after his family became concerned for his welfare, describing his disappearance as out of character.

Police in Brisbane confirmed the following day that Mr Lamont had been found dead.

Mr Lamont lived in the Queensland city with his wife of five years, Natasha, and their young daughter, Charlie.

Posting on Facebook, Mrs Lamont said she had been left heartbroken by the loss of her "best friend" and "rock".

She wrote: "You brought so much happiness, laughter and love to our lives. You put your family above everything.

"You were selfless and you were genuine and nothing was ever too much.

"You will always be loved and admired more than you know.

"We are proud to be your family and Charlie is honoured to call you daddy. You will never be forgotten.

"We will remember the good times and the times of love."

A GoFundMe page has been set up by friend Scott Egerton to support the family and has already raised over £5,500 (€6,356)

Mr Egerton said Mr Lamont would be remembered as a beloved son, brother, father, husband and friend.

"John's life was full of love and joy and although we grieve his loss we can remember the jolly, fun-loving, Irishman we know and love," he said.

"He leaves a touching memory on each and every person who had the fortune of meeting him."

Hundreds of people have also paid tribute to Mr Lamont on social media, describing him as "a fun-loving, kind and extremely funny young man".

Mr Lamont is also survived by his parents, John and Marian, brothers David and Brian, sister-in-law Natasha, nephew Fionn and wider family circle.

His remains were reposing at the family home in Lisdrum Court in Newry at the weekend following a funeral service in Australia last week.

A celebration of his life will take place in Dardistown Crematorium in Dublin at 2.30pm this afternoon.

Mr Lamont's family have thanked the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust for their assistance in bringing his remains home to Northern Ireland.

They have requested that, instead of floral tributes, people make donations to the charity, which helps families return the bodies of their loved ones from abroad.
