You rarely beat the Irish . . .

At least we take defeat with good grace and humour.

The aftermath of the match in the Gdansk arena on Thursday night saw fans joke about the traumatic hammering they'd just witnessed.

"Espana for the passing, Ireland for the chanting," sang one supporter, while everyone joined in with an ironic chorus of: "You're hardly going to believe us, we're going to win the group."

"We were robbed!" screamed another fan, while dropping to his knees in mock indignation.

And then there was a fresh twist on an old classic -- "You rarely beat the Irish."
