MET Eireann has issued a yellow weather warning tonight as temperatures are set to plunge to -5C.

There will be widespread frost and ice, as well as up to 3cm of snow falling in some areas.

Snow is most likely to fall in the west and north.

Met Eireann said: “Wintry showers will develop tonight, with snow likely to affect parts of Ulster, Connacht and Munster as well as parts of the midlands, with accumulations likely.

“It should remain drier and clearer in parts of the east with some freezing fog in the slack winds. Temperatures will fall to between 0 and -5 degrees.”

The rest of the week will be very cold, but mainly dry.

Going forward towards the weekend, the cold snap shows no signs of ending.
