Yellow alert: snow-ice warning in effect across several counties tonight

A snow-ice warning has come into effect in a number of counties across the country this evening.

Met Eireann have issued the yellow alert as of 6pm this evening, to remain in place until 3am tomorrow morning.

Snow is ikely to fall on hills and mountains in the southern part of the country in particular, Met Eireann says.

Accummulations of 3cm are expected in certain areas with lowest temperatures tonight falling between -1 and +2 degrees.

There will be some dry, clear periods in some eastern areas, but it will be mostly cloudy with showery rain in places and heavy rain will affect parts of the south at times.

Later on tonight, frost will develop with some fog and the risk of icy patches.

Tomorrow, the last of the rain or sleet along some western and southwestern coasts will clear, and the day will bring a mix of sunny spells and cloud and just a few well scattered showers.

Top temperatures tonight will fall between five and eight degrees.
