World's best come to town for top piano competition

THREE Irish pianists will have home advantage as they take on 50 international rivals at one of the most prestigious piano competitions in the world.

The Dublin International Piano Competition gets underway tomorrow at the RDS.

Tinkling the ivories for Ireland are three first-timers -- Maire Carroll (20), from Malahide, Co Dublin, Nadene Fiorentini (22), from Greencastle, Co Donegal, and Benjamin Shaffrey (21), from Ranelagh in Dublin.

"I get very nervous before competitions, it means a lot to me. It's exciting but terrifying," laughed Maire.

The event is ranked in the top five piano competitions in the world.

Members of the public can attend the initial rounds in the RDS and the semi-finals and final in the NCH with tickets costing from €5 -- €45 and available from the venues.
