WORKERS who closed off a section of a main road causing disruption to traffic said they were left with no choice because they had not been paid since May.

About 20 people, including eight sub-contractors, blocked off part of the Dingle to Tralee route claiming they are owed around €200,000 by BM Groundworks Ltd.

The Derry company was subcontracted by Noel Regan & Sons (NRS) in Ballaghaderreen, Co Roscommon. NRS was awarded the €4.26m contract by Kerry County Council in 2011 for the road between Annascaul and Gortbreagogue.

In a statement, NRS said the BM Groundworks' subcontractors involved in the dispute were not at any time employed directly by NRS and that the company is not indebted to them.
