A YOUNG man who died in a work accident in Roscommon this week had previously raised thousands of euro for charity

Liam Elwood (38) from Gothaganny, Castlerea in Co Roscommon died tragically while unloading a lorry in a warehouse in Ballaghaderreen, Co Roscommon.

Mr Elwood had been unloading a lorry full of chairs which had returned from an event in the UK, when he fell and was seriously injured at Sharkey's Yard in the town.

He was taken to Mayo General Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. A postmortem was carried out.

Mr Elwood, who ran the family bar, 'The Coney Island Bar', in Gothaganny, had been heavily involved in charity events. He was closely involved in the organising of West Fest in 2011 which raised thousands for the Mayo-Roscommon Hospice.

The previous year he had played a vital role in organising a barn dance which raised €40,000 for the same charity.

The Health and Safety Authority confirmed that it had opened an investigation into his death.

"We are carrying out a full investigation into the incident and an inspector is there at the moment," a spokesperson said.
