Women giving birth now older
WOMEN are having children later in life with the average age of a woman giving birth now at just under 32 years, writes Breda Heffernan.
New figures released by the Central Statistics Office show that the average age of moth-ers for registering births was 31.7 years -- up slightly from the same period a year earlier.
Meanwhile, the average age of mothers having their first child was 29.7 years.
Just over a third of all births, or 6,543 births, were outside of marriage -- but more than half of these were to unmarried parents living at the same address.
Fingal in north Dublin recorded the highest birth rate at 21.5 per 1,000 of the population.
