Woman's car struck by train

A WOMAN in her sixties was lucky to escape alive last night when a train crashed into her car on a level crossing.

The car was spun around in the crash at a gated level crossing in Birdhill, Co Tipperary, shortly after 8pm.

The 6.20pm train from Ballybrophy in Co Laois to Limerick had eight passengers and two staff on board when it hit the car.

The woman, who was alone, escaped serious injury but was taken to hospital as a precaution. One source said last night: "She is an extremely lucky woman."

Members of the Rail Accident Investigation Unit were at the scene last night.
