The body of a woman has been recovered on the banks of the River Shannon.

Gardai have launched an investigation into the death of the woman, who is believed to be in her 40s.

It is understood a man walking his dog discovered the remains at around 9.30am on Monday.

Gardai said the Office of the State Pathologist has been notified and will carry out a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death.

Forensic officers are examining the scene, off New Road in Limerick.

Gardai later confirmed the woman's death was not suspicious and was being treated as a tragic accident.
