A woman's body has been found after a fire in a house in south Belfast.

The woman believed to be aged in her 50s was discovered deceased in the Archdale Drive area of the Belvoir Estate on Sunday January 3.

Police received a report of the fire shortly after 2pm.

A post mortem examination will take place to determine the cause of death.

A police spokesman said an investigation into the cause of the fire and the death of the woman have now commenced.

SDLP MLA for South Belfast Claire Hanna tweeted her shock at the news.

She said: "Awfully sad news coming through of a woman's body found in the aftermath of a fire in Belvoir.

"A horrible time for her family and neighbours."

Alliance Councillor Paula Bradshaw said she was "horrified" at the news.

She tweeted: "Horrified to hear of fatality in house fire in Belvoir Estate. Thoughts with family and friends."
