Woman saved at high tide

A 60-YEAR-OLD holidaymaker had to be airlifted from a beach yesterday, before a rapidly incoming tide, after falling from a horse and injuring her back.

The accident happened on a beach known locally as Cliffoney beach, north of Sligo town, just after noon yesterday.

The woman was trekking on the long beach -- which is also known as Trawalua Strand -- with a small group attached to a local riding stables, when she fell from her horse.

Ambulance crew contacted Malin coastguard when they were unable to reach the woman, who had suffered spinal injuries.

The situation was made more urgent by the rapidly incoming tide.

The Sligo-based coastguard S-61 helicopter was tasked to the scene and landed on the beach within 10 minutes.

The injured woman was flown to Sligo General Hospital where her condition was described last night as stable.

A local who witnessed the rescue praised the efficiency of the emergency services.
