A woman is in serious condition in hospital after a traffic accident in Cork city centre early this morning.

The female pedestrian, who is understood to be in her 30s, suffered serious injuries after a collision with a car shortly after 3am on the South Mall.

She was attended to by other pedestrians before being rushed by paramedics to hospital.

The woman is understood to have been walking home after being out with friends in the city centre when the accident occurred.

Gardai immediately cordoned off the road to allow for accident scene investigators to examine the area.

Officers have also appealed for any witnesses to contact them.

Gardai are also carefully examining CCTV security camera footage from a number of premises in the area.

Motorists have been urged to avoid the South Mall area due to traffic restrictions until the road is opened later today when gardai have finished their inspection of the accident scene.

The road is expected to fully re-open by the early afternoon.
