Woman hurt by falling tree branch

Kathryn Hayes

A 57-YEAR-OLD woman was critically ill in hospital last night following a freak accident in Limerick city.

The pedestrian was walking in the O'Connell Avenue area shortly after 10.30am when a large branch that had been sliced off a tree struck her.

A truck, unbeknownst to the driver, knocked the branch from the tree onto the footpath as it was driving past.

A passing nurse stopped her car and offered assistance at the scene, before the woman was taken by ambulance to the Mid Western Regional Hospital.

It's understood the woman is a retired school teacher who lives in the local area. A spokeswoman for the HSE described her condition as "critical".

Gardai have spoken to the driver of the truck and interviews were ongoing yesterday.

The road was later re-opened and gardai have appealed for any witnesses to contact Roxboro Garda station on 061 214340.
