A woman has been arrested in connection to an investigation into alleged physical abuse at a care home in County Longford for people with intellectual disabilities.

Gardaí confirmed they are detaining a woman in Longford Garda station this morning in relation to allegations of abuse at a Health Service Executive-owned and operated residential care centre in the Midlands.

The woman, who is in her late 30's, is currently being detained under section 4 of Criminal Justice Act, they said.

It is understood the woman has worked at a number of centres in the Midlands, and that gardaí have been interviewing staff and clients in the area since August as part of their investigation.

In a statement, the HSE said it could not comment on the investigation but that “it notified the statutory authorities when the initial complaints were made… and [that it] had been in contact with all the families.”

It added, that all protective measures to ensure the welfare of its clients and residents were in place.
