A woman in her 20s was killed and five others were injured in a single vehicle car crash in west Cork in the early hours of this (MON) morning.
The woman was one of five passengers in a car which went out of control on the N71 Skibbereen bypass at approximately 1.45AM.
She was pronounced dead at the scene and her body was removed to Cork University Hospital (CUH).
Four other passengers, one woman and three men in their 20s, suffered serious injuries and were taken to Cork University Hospital (CUH).
The woman and one of the men are in a critical condition in hospital with life threatening injuries.
A second man is described as being in a critical condition with non-life threatening injuries, while another man remains in hospital with serious injuries.
The male driver, who suffered minor injuries, was arrested at the scene but was subsequently brought to Cork University Hospital.
Local councillor Brendan Leahy (Lab) described the incident as a “tragedy.”
“It’s another one of these awful tragedies on our roads,” said Cllr Leahy.
“It’s sad for everybody involved,” he said.
The scene is currently closed pending the completion of an examination by Garda forensic collision investigators and local diversions are in place.
Gardai in Clonakilty, Co Cork have issued an appeal for witnesses to come forward.
