GARDAI made a desperate attempt to prevent a fatal collision as a woman, in her 60s, drove along the wrong side of a busy motorway yesterday.
The gardai, who were travelling in a traffic corps vehicle, turned their car around after they were passed by the woman, who was travelling eastwards on the westbound carriageway of the M6 in Co Westmeath yesterday afternoon.
Officers used their car's lights and siren to warn oncoming traffic but were powerless to prevent the woman's car from crashing into another vehicle, driven by a woman in her 30s.
Despite the efforts of paramedics, the woman, who was alone in her car, died from her injuries.
The other woman, who was also the sole occupant of her vehicle, was brought to Tullamore General Hospital. She was in a stable condition last night.
Meanwhile, a young man was killed last night after a head-on collision between a motorcycle and a car. The accident occurred shortly after 8pm on the Kilumney-Crossbarry Road some 20km from Cork city.
The motorcyclist, a 32-year-old father of one, died before he could be transferred to Cork University Hospital. The deceased is understood to be from the Ballincollig-Ovens area of Cork.
