An elderly woman was on her way to bingo when she suffered fatal injuries in a road accident.

Julia Sugrue had only celebrated her 90th birthday last month, but neighbours described her as sprightly.

Mrs Sugrue, a widow, was not far from home in St Finan's Terrace, Spukane in Waterville, Co Kerry, when the accident happened at 8.40pm on Tuesday.

She was pronounced dead at the scene, and her body was removed to Kerry Hospital. The driver of the car, a woman in her 20s, was not injured.

Meanwhile, a woman in her 20s has died and three people were injured in a crash on the main Longford to Athlone road near the village of Kenagh in Co Longford yesterday.

The woman was the sole occupant of a car that was in collision with a truck with three occupants, who were all injured.
