An elderly woman has died in a house fire in Co Cavan.

The woman, who is in her late 70s, was tragically killed when a fire tore through her home in Cavan town.

The incident occurred at the three-story building on Church Street shortly after 2.15pm this afternoon.

It's believed the woman was trapped on the third floor when the blaze broke out.

The fire was reported by neighbors and emergency services were contacted and immediately rushed to the scene.

Her remains were discovered in the house a short time later.

Her body was taken to Cavan General Hospital where a post-mortem examination took place.

A technical examination of the scene is due to be carried out today.

Locals described the woman as being a "kind hearted woman who kept herself to herself."

"She lost her husband in 2011 and since then she has been very quiet. They were a lovely couple. She will be sadly missed," said a neighbour.
