Witches, tigers and scares, oh my

Mark Hilliard

WRAP a 400lb (181kg) live Amur Tiger around your Halloween pumpkin and suddenly things get a lot scarier.

It's going to be more 'roar in the day' than 'bump in the night' this weekend as Dublin Zoo sinks its teeth into its Halloween spectacular, complete with its own kind of fear factor.

Thousands are expected at the 'Boo at Dublin Zoo' event on Sunday.

There will be an assortment of activities, including face painting, scary arts and crafts, 'creepy keeper' talks and even a Monster Disco.

Those kitted out in the best costumes will be in the running for scary prizes.

Meanwhile, in Virginia, Co Cavan, a giant pumpkin weighing around 500kg -- the equivalent of a Fiat 500 car -- will be the centre piece of the aptly timed Virginia Pumpkin Festival.

The giant pumpkin has been grown by renowned twin growers Ian and Stuart Paton from the UK.

But it is not the only fine specimen to go on show this weekend as thousands will be rolled out for the annual pumpkin weigh-in on Sunday.

The €2,000 prize event has become a local custom and this year, overgrown squashes from as far away as Germany, Slovakia and the UK will be on display.
