UP to half a million visitors are expected to descend on the south-east for the second annual Winterval Festival, which boosted business by 30pc in its inaugural year.

Last year, the centre of Waterford city was transformed for the largest festival of its kind in Ireland and more than 250,000 people visited the area during the month of the event. This year, that figure is expected to double, with families being offered a trail of more than 20 different events, with 13 of those activities free of charge.

Details of Winterval 2013 were announced yesterday by RTE children's television presenter Megan Cassidy and it was confirmed that it will kick off with the arrival of Santa Claus aboard a Viking longboat along the River Suir. There will also be street entertainment, a range of evening events set in unique heritage sites, an animal farm and a 3D light and sound show. It runs from November 29 till December 23 and December 27 to 31. For further details, visit www.winterval.ie.
