Consumers are facing a winter of price increases that will hit household budgets hard. Electricity prices, health insurance premiums and bank charges are all to rise, while cuts this month in the Vat rate are unlikely to be passed on to consumers by all firms and service providers.

The good news is that Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe is promising no income tax rises in the Budget.
