Win sealed with a kiss from Flatley
LORD of the Dance Michael Flatley surprised contestants at the World Irish Dance Championships in Killarney when he turned up to present trophies yesterday.
The unscheduled visit by the man who has brought Irish dancing to a world stage took even the organisers of An Comhdhail World Irish Dance Championships by surprise.
Word had got out that Flatley was in the area when some of the dancers bumped into him in the town.
The star of 'Riverdance' and 'Lord of the Dance' was enjoying a holiday in Killarney with his wife Niamh and son Michael Jnr.
Contestants along with their parents, grandparents and teachers were delighted when he showed up at the Killarney Convention Centre yesterday afternoon and helped hand out the trophies to the winners.
Among the fans was Jane Condren, who had travelled from Derry with the Porter School to compete in the under-17 competition.
Winning the World Champion title didn't cause Jane as much shock as being presented with the trophy by her hero. "When I saw Michael appear on stage I couldn't Win sealed with a kiss from Flatleybelieve it," she said. "I think everyone in the INEC was just in shock."
And the star was in no hurry to leave either and happily stayed around to chat with the dancers and pose for photographs.
