'Wilderness park' plan gets go-ahead
MORE than 11,000 hectares of state-owned land is to be designated for Ireland's first US-style wilderness park – the first of its kind in Western Europe.
The wilderness of forest, mountain, bog, river and lakes is located in the Nephin Beg mountain range in north Mayo.
A deal was signed yesterday between forestry agency Coillte and the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht on the project. The project involves Coillte taking 4,400 hectares out of their commercial forest operation and "rewilding" it over a 15-year period.
Wild Nephin project manager Bill Murphy said the park would give visitors "an authentic wilderness experience" and would include a range of recreational opportunities.
