How many companies bid for the second mobile phone licence?

Six consortia made bids. North Tipperary TD Michael Lowry was then the minister with overall responsibility for the awarding of the lucrative licence.

Who won?

Esat Digifone, a consortium led by businessman Denis O'Brien.

What is Persona?

Persona, which came second in the bidding, is owned by Dublin businessmen Tony Boyle (its CEO) and Michael McGinley. Sigma, Unisource and the ESB were originally part of the Persona consortium, but the case has only been moved in Persona's name. Its proceedings are against the Minister for Public Enterprise, Ireland and the Attorney General.

What is Comcast?

Comcast was part of a consortium called Cellstar, which came last out of the six bids. Businessman Declan Ganley was part of the Cellstar consortium which included Comcast, RTE, CGI Ltd and Bord Na Mona. Its action was brought against the Minister for Public Enterprise, Michael Lowry, the State, Esat Telecom and Denis O'Brien.
