Wheel deal for George with free parking for life
HE might not be a Fine Gael TD any more, but he's still enjoying the perks and privileges laid on at Leinster House.
George Lee was spotted yesterday sliding his Mercedes into the Leinster House car space he was allocated following his election to the Dail last June. As a former TD, Lee is entitled to use it for life.
Parking spaces have soared in value at Leinster House since the restoration of a historic lawn which had spent 10 years as a car park, reduced the number of spaces from 293 to 225.
And, after years of lecturing us on the vagaries of the real-estate market, the former RTE presenter knows a property gift horse when he sees one.
While he arrived shortly before his former Dail opponents learned their fate in the revised Cabinet, George did not slip into the House to find out who might be going where.
Instead he headed down Molesworth Street, past the hundreds of people queuing outside the Passport Office.
Could George himself require travel documents to fill a certain position, soon to become vacant, in the US perhaps?
An RTE cameraman wondered if his erstwhile colleague might be prepared to conduct a few interviews with members of the public. But George evidently had something better to do -- and went off about his business.
