What is a supernova?

A SUPERNOVA is the death explosion of a massive star.

When the star explodes, it causes a burst of radiation that often briefly outshines an entire galaxy, before fading from view over several weeks or months.

The explosions are unimaginably violent and can also be catastrophic for any planets that orbit the star.
